Dr. John Obermiller, MD

After serving in the United States Marine Corps as a C-130 navigator, Dr. John P. Obermiller completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and received his Doctorate in Medicine from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Obermiller is now the president and medical director of Medical Equation Inc. based in Westlake. He co-founded the company in 1996 — one of the first utilization management services companies of its kind — and has served as a medical director since the company’s inception. Dr. Obermiller, his partners and co-medical directors — Dr. Brian C. Buck and Dr. Peter M. Garcia — form the Medical Equation leadership team for 22 doctors representing 19 specialties.

Dr. Obermiller is board certified with the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a Fellow of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He co-founded Texas Orthopedics Sports and Rehabilitation Associates in 1986 in Austin. A practicing physician for more than 25 years, he maintains a private practice in Austin and is a medical staff member at several Austin area hospitals.

Dr. Obermiller is a Texas Division of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation designated doctor and has held that designation since 1993. With over 20 years in the workers’ compensation and liability claims field, he is a leading expert in compensability evaluation based on the Official Disability Guidelines (ODG).

Dr. Obermiller provides expert testimony for contested case hearings and is a sought- after speaker and lecturer. He regularly conducts Texas Department of Insurance certified continuing education courses covering an array of utilization review topics.

Dr. Obermiller is regularly listed in Super Doctors® published in Texas Monthly magazine and is an avid outdoorsman, pilot and hunting enthusiast. He is  licensed in the states of California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

Obermiller is no stranger to occupational medicine and served as the medical director for Lowe’s of Texas for several years where he reviewed and evaluated complicated cases related to on and off the job injuries. He has also over seen multiple other health clinics and mobile organizations over the last 10 years to include working as a contractor for the National Guard Bureau where he oversaw physical exams for thousands of Guardsmen prior to deployment.

He has served with Front Line Mobile Health as its Medical Director since its inception.
